Here at SIUC, given staffing limitations, I have taught pretty much everything vaguely classical, and something things that are classical at all.
One staple of my teaching is Latin. I am a budding convert to what was long ago called the “Natural Method” and these days employs concepts like comprehensible input and teaching for acquisition (rather than the old tried and true but wonderfully ineffective “grammar and translation” approach). In practical terms the means using Ørberg’s Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata, emphasis on reading comprehension rather than translation, and efforts at oral work.
Another recentish development is an interest in using gamification following the Reacting to the Past model. I have taught games centered in ancient Athens and Rome and also ventured into wider territory including the Council of Nicaea, revolutionary France, and the trial of Galileo. In the fall of 2023, I debuted a game of my own dedicated to the trial of Socrates.
